James Swift worked for Andrew Ross on the optics department before he and his son (James Mansell Swift) opened their own company James Swift & Son, University Optical Works in 1857 in London. They were manufacturing various optical instruments including microscopes. During 1880s-1890s they also made some cameras. The company was still active in 1928.
