Back to New Taiwan Price Guide
The New Taiwan Photographic Corp. was founded in 1981 in Taiwan. It produced a huge range of simple OEM cameras, as well as
cameras under its own
brand - Ouyama. While exact number of models or even their attribution is debated, all cameras with similar characteristics
are listed under this
manufacturer. Some of the Asaflex cameras were made by New Taiwan. Majority of New Taiwan cameras pretend to look like SLR or rangefinder, and most have an added metal weight inside, at the bottom of camera, for perceived solidity. Some of the cameras were advertised on TV as having a great value comparing to other well known brands, but still, these cameras were built from cheap materials, and often had plastic lens. Several models were distributed to the subscribers of magazines like Time or Sports Illustrated. Some lenses are attributed to Kinetic brand, and pretty much all lenses have "Optical Lens" or "Lens Made In Japan" in their name. Some cameras with the same names but different lenses have different characteristics, so lens names are also listed for convenience. US importer of some of the cameras was Lavec - originally known as AV Lavec, and later simply as Lavec, the trademark was first used in 1978, while the commercial use started in 1980. This trademark was created for "televisions, radios & cameras" use and was in use until 1994 with registration in Wilmington, CA. Some sources attribute many cameras to Lavec, though it was only an importer. Pretty much none of these cameras have historical or functional value. The only value is for some collectors who are interested in such items. |
