The company was established in 1830 in Glasgow, Scotland by the optician John Lizars. They started camera making mid 1890s after Matthew Ballantine took over the business c1883. The merger between Lizars and C Jeffrey Black took place in 1999 to form Black & Lizars optical retail company.
