Kodak Eastman: Retina IIIc (028/N)

Postby roybeasley » Sun Apr 28, 2013 7:41 am

I have acquired this Kodak Retina IIIc after my father died. I am not a photographer, so it is of little use to me. Is there an interest in this camera from the forum? It appears to be in good condition, with just some wear on the leather cover. My father's name is embossed on the top of the leather case.

I too have acquired a Retina IIIc from my parents. The leather case is in excellent condition. I don't recall my parents using this camera to any great extent - holidays maybe. I would like to sell this to a collector or someone who would appreciate it if there is any interest on this board.
Thank you!

The normal Retina IIIc (Type 028) was produced between 1957 and 1960 and is much lower priced. This is the so called Nachbau version (Type 028/N) of which only 150 cameras were produced in 1977 hence the high price.

You're talking about Retina III C ( large "c") - type 028. They're more expensive on collectors market, than examples of Retina III c ( small "c") but it only pertains to type 021 -I ( 1954 - 1957). Because additionally, there is another version of Retina III c ( small "c"), called type 021 - II (only manufactured between July and November of 1957). Moreover, all three types of Retinas III ( large and small "c") came in two lens mount ( and lens itself) variations : Schneider-Kreuznach and Rodenstock. Rodenstock versions were never officially imported to the US, hence examples of this variation in American market are much more expensive ( due to scarcity). For all three types Rodenstock ( Heligon) variation is much more sought after here. Now, because any mount variation of type 021 - II is much scarcer ( globally), than types 028 or 021 - I Rodenstock mount variation of type 021 - II is the most expensive in the pack. Because only about 2,000 copies of 021 - II were made and Rodenstock variation was usually only 25% of the run of ANY "c" model ( that's how Kodak corporate sales were structured at that time), we can estimate that only about 500 examples of type 021 - II ( Rodenstock) were manufactured. It will place that variant only slightly lower (pricewise), than type 028/N and type 021- II ( Schneider) only slightly lower, than 021 - II ( Rodenstock) Then goes 028 ( Rodenstock), 021 - I ( Rodenstock), 028 ( Schneider), and 021 - I ( Schneider) as the cheapest in the pack.

First picture I attached shows both mount variations of type 021 - II and the second one both mount variations of type 021 -I. All cameras are from my private collection .
