Collection Software

Postby shadow67550 » Sun Oct 07, 2012 7:14 am

As I dig deeper and deeper into the boxes of cameras and accessories I have "collected" over the years, it is increasingly obvious that I need to organize it. I know that I can use a simple spreadsheet but would like something that allows more detail, pictures and such. Does anyone have any recomendations or evaluation on software that is available? Thanks for any information you would be willing to share.

I wasn't able to find such a software for free, so I decided to create camera inventory app, which lets you to export your inventory into the excel spreadsheet. I doubt there will be a good standalone software for this purpose, considering it needs to be developed for windows, unix, mac, also don't forget about various versions of these OSes.
If you have any suggestions on what else to add to this on-line app, let me know.

I had the same problem, but I know Access and Excel, so I set up a nice Access database where I can put all pertinent information including an image. I also did the same for Lenses, Filters and Accessories. Here is a screenshot of the program I created.

Arnstone, that is awesome. I just have a simple spreadsheet for documenting my collection, but what you have there looks great! Is it a huge file size?
Have a look at some of the cameras in my collection:

Hi. Well in todays standards, 178MB is small. That's just the Access file. (The Excel file is much smaller, at 300KB) The majority of size comes from the images. Which are aprox 420x420 pixels. (can adjust to any size I want, but this size looks good) This is for 168 cameras that I have now, but I only have pictures for about half of that. They are in boxes and I take them out to photograph them when I can. (I also have quite a few digital cameras, not sure if I am allowed to post them here) It took some time to put it all together, and I did start from an Excel spreadsheet, but I wanted to add images of exactly what I have. And the Access allows that as an OLE object. With a little trial and error, anyone should be able to do the same. You must have Microsoft Photo Editor installed so that I can drag and drop an image. I am willing to share my knowledge with anyone who is interested. Thanks for the compliment.
