Riken institute was founded in 1917. The photo paper division of an institute became an independent company in 1936. The very next year, this company bought "Olympic Camera" manufacturer, and began producing cameras on it's own. This company was renamed to Ricoh (after it's line of cameras) in 1963. Ricoh company still exists and produces digital cameras.
