The Imperial Satellite II was produced in two versions and several varieties beginning in 1961 by the Herbert George Camera Company of Chicago under the Imperial Name. A great little plastic camera that came as a “7 piece Flash camera Kit”. The box had the camera, Flash attachment, two batteries, two flash bulbs, and a roll of Imperial 127 film. It came with the original instructions, a LIFE foto service agreement with postage paid, warranty registration card, and the instruction booklet. The instructions had the Delta 127, Lark, 127 Reflex, Mark 27, and the Satellite 127 but not the Satellite II. The flash unit operates with 2 AA batteries that are inserted after removing the reflector with a lock ring at the base of the bulb socket. The flash unit is plugged into the two female bushings found on the top center of the camera. The eject button for the flash bulbs is on the back of the flash attachment directly behind the flash bulb. At the front of the camera a little switch changes from color or B&W mode. In fact what it changes is the aperture size that can be useful as a “cloudy (use color)” and “sunny (use B&W)” settings. The original retail price was around $8.00 in the US. The 127 film is getting exceedingly difficult to find, and what is still out there is expensive. It makes 4x4cm square frames and you can get 12 on a roll. The camera has a, plastic lens, a 1/50s snapshot shutter, flash capable, and a two-setting aperture. The Satellite II also has a fancy decorative chrome trim ring around the lens, which appears to stylishly compliment the polished metal faceplate and its Art Deco screen printing. Among the many varieties were different colors, multicolored models, and even some “Mercury Satellite”-branded examples produced as a promotion for Mercury automobiles. The Satellite 127 and the Satellite II are the same camera. The only changes were cosmetic to the front panel, and the addition of a metal trim ring around the lens.
